Bare Metal (PC Farm)
While the majority of DaDesktop operations utilize virtual desktop environments, certain tasks demand the performance and capabilities of a physical machine. Bare metal deployment ensures that every participant is provisioned with a dedicated physical desktop or server, all of which are orchestrated seamlessly through DaDesktop.
One machine per person
Rather than sharing virtual resources, each individual is allocated their own exclusive physical hardware.
Manage physical classrooms remotely
Integrate existing on-site classrooms with DaDesktop to oversee all machines centrally, eliminating the need for physical presence.
When you need bare metal
- Applications that are incompatible with virtualization environments, such as ONAP and OpenStack.
- Specialized hardware that cannot be effectively virtualized, including specific GPUs, Mellanox cards, and other networking equipment.
- Training scenarios where interacting with firmware or physical components is integral to the learning outcomes.
- On-premise classroom configurations that require centralized, remote management capabilities.
How it works
Every physical machine is linked to a DaDesktop node using a control cable known as ddnexus. To initiate the process, select the "Metal PC" option when setting up a standalone or fresh-start desktop. Upon selection, the desktop environment is deployed directly onto the target physical hardware.
PC Farm
Existing office desktops can be integrated into the infrastructure to function as bare metal nodes. Within this ecosystem, each physical desktop is referred to as a potato. The central server responsible for managing these units is known as a pumpkin (also identified as the DaDesktop node or ddnode). The USB cable that bridges each potato to the pumpkin is termed a potato stalk.
Potato stalk cables can be sourced from eBay and Alibaba.
