Overview of Hermes Agent

Developed by Nous Research, Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent designed to execute complex tasks, retain learned information, and evolve over time. Rather than simply generating responses, it leverages tools like terminals, browsers, file systems, web search, and code execution to actively accomplish work.

Understanding AI Agents

An AI agent goes beyond text generation. When provided with a specific goal, it autonomously determines the necessary actions, utilizes tools, observes outcomes, and continuously progresses toward the objective.

While many AI agents can already handle multi-step tasks with tools, the key differentiator lies in post-task behavior. Some agents treat every interaction as a unique problem. In contrast, Hermes is engineered to retain valuable knowledge and procedures, enhancing its utility with each use. The Distinctive Features of Hermes

Hermes incorporates a built-in learning loop. It develops skills from experience, refines them during use, stores pertinent information, and retrieves data from past sessions when context from earlier work is required.

Persistent Memory

Hermes retains relevant information about your preferences, projects, and environment across different sessions.

Evolving Skills

It converts effective workflows into reusable skills and optimizes them as it discovers more efficient methods for task execution.

Session History

Hermes can access previous conversations to retrieve information pertinent to current operations.

Benefits of Using Hermes Agent

Hermes is particularly valuable for tasks involving multiple steps, tools, or applications. Instead of toggling between AI chats, terminals, browsers, and files, you can delegate the entire workflow to Hermes, which manages the coordination.

  • End-to-Task Execution: Provide Hermes with a broad objective rather than requesting individual instructions.
  • Context Retention: Maintain useful information across separate sessions.
  • Workflow Reusability: Save successful strategies as skills to avoid re-solving the same problems.
  • Background Automation: Schedule tasks to run automatically without manual intervention.
  • Task Delegation: Utilize subagents for different components of larger projects.
  • Model Flexibility: Connect to local models or supported cloud providers.

Hermes Capabilities

  • Software Development: Inspect code, debug issues, implement changes, execute tests, and manage repositories.
  • Research: Search the web, analyze sources, gather data, and organize findings.
  • Automation: Execute scripts and schedule recurring routines such as reporting and monitoring.
  • System Administration: Manage terminals, install software, configure systems, and resolve technical issues.
  • Browser Operations: Navigate websites, interact with web pages, and extract information.
  • File Management: Read, create, edit, search, and organize files.
  • Integrations: Connect additional services and tools via MCP.

Continuous Improvement Through Use

Consider a complex, multi-step task assigned to Hermes. During execution, it may identify an effective workflow. Instead of losing this knowledge upon completion, Hermes saves it as a skill.

When similar tasks arise, Hermes can leverage this saved skill as a foundation. If refinements are needed, the skill can be updated. Additionally, its memory retains key facts and lessons from prior work.

Memory and skills serve complementary roles: memory stores contextual information, while skills store procedural methods. Together, they enable Hermes to build a robust understanding of both what it knows and how to execute recurring work.

Background Automation

Hermes features a built-in scheduler for recurring tasks. You can define schedules using natural language, allowing Hermes to perform work independently without waiting for a new session.

This capability supports reports, monitoring, backups, research, and other routines. Scheduled tasks maintain continuity between executions, enabling them to build upon previous outcomes.

Local and Cloud Model Support

Hermes is not restricted to a single LLM. You can connect it to local models or supported cloud providers and switch models without altering the agent's tools, memory, or workflows.

Utilizing a local model offers greater control over hardware and data processing locations. It also allows Hermes to interact with your local files and resources without transmitting data to external providers.

Installation Guide

Hermes is compatible with Linux, macOS, Windows, and WSL2. You can install the desktop application or use the command-line version independently.

For Linux, macOS, or WSL2, open a terminal and execute the following:

curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash

On Windows, run the installer via PowerShell:

irm https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.ps1 | iex

Post-installation, run the setup wizard to configure your model provider and other settings:

hermes setup

Running Hermes on DaDesktop

Hermes requires an environment capable of running its tools and storing data. DaDesktop offers a cloud desktop equipped with the necessary CPU, RAM, storage, and GPU resources to run Hermes alongside a local LLM.

This is particularly useful if the desired model requires more VRAM than your local machine provides. Select a GPU with sufficient VRAM, launch a DaDesktop instance, install Hermes, and run the model locally with the agent.

You can also keep the desktop active for scheduled tasks and long-running workflows, eliminating the need to leave your personal computer powered on.
