almalinux-deploy

A tool for migrating from EL to AlmaLinux.

Usage

To convert your EL8 operating system to AlmaLinux, follow the procedures outlined below:

  1. Converting to AlmaLinux requires CentOS 8.4 or 8.5. While it is recommended to update to version 8.5 before proceeding with the migration, this is not mandatory if you are already running at least CentOS 8.4. It is advisable to reboot the system after applying updates to ensure any new changes are fully active.

    sudo dnf update -y
    sudo reboot

  1. Perform a system backup. As not all potential scenarios have been tested, there is a risk of unexpected issues. Maintaining a restore point ensures you can recover if necessary.

  2. Obtain the almalinux-deploy.sh script:

    $ curl -O https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AlmaLinux/almalinux-deploy/master/almalinux-deploy.sh
  3. Execute the script and review the output for any errors:

    $ sudo bash almalinux-deploy.sh
      ...
      Migration to AlmaLinux is completed
  4. A reboot is recommended to boot into the AlmaLinux kernel:

    sudo reboot

  5. Verify that your system has been successfully converted:

    # check release file
    $ cat /etc/redhat-release
    AlmaLinux release 8.5 (Arctic Sphynx)

    # check that the system boots AlmaLinux kernel by default
    $ sudo grubby --info DEFAULT | grep AlmaLinux
    title="AlmaLinux (4.18.0-348.el8.x86_64) 8.5 (Arctic Sphynx)"
  6. Thank you for choosing AlmaLinux!
