Potential issues during use
A limited number of applications may require minor adjustments to ensure full compatibility with DaDesktop.
Challenges during Fresh Start cloning and available solutions
In most cases, applications prepared within the Fresh Start environment function seamlessly with DaDesktop (DD). However, a few specific applications may not operate as expected due to the cloning process and may require additional steps to restore normal functionality.
- Oracle Database Server – The hostname must be updated from the duplicated value to 127.0.0.1.
- Hyper-V server – When cloned from the Fresh Start machine, Hyper-V may encounter issues with duplicate MAC addresses if the External switch is enabled.
- Google Chrome – Chrome might fail to launch properly on cloned machines if a profile linked to the Fresh Start machine was not fully shut down during the cloning process.
- WSL - Windows Subsystem for Linux – Testing has revealed that DaDesktop instances with a WSL installation are not portable. Specifically, moving a DaDesktop machine containing a WSL installation to another DD server will prevent successful booting. The underlying cause is unknown, but it is likely that Windows makes assumptions about the hardware it is installed on, leading to conflicts when moved. As WSL is rarely used for training (Linux is typically used directly), this issue has not yet been fully investigated.
- Issues where a trial software licence uses the MAC address to track the licence – In this scenario, the license was tied to a MAC address; upon cloning the machine, the license appeared to have already been activated and exhausted.
-
Applications that require licensing may need to be added after the Fresh Start image has been cloned.
Additional issues that may arise when using DaDesktop
-
Significant slowdown of VirtualBox when using Hyper-V and VirtualBox (This issue occurs independently of DaDesktop usage)
Problem: VirtualBox runs extremely slowly on Windows machines, making it nearly impossible to deliver courses. However, the solution is straightforward:
Solution 1: Uninstall Hyper-V virtualization in Windows:https://www.wintips.org/fix-virtualbox-running-very-slow-in-windows-10-11/
Solution 2: Ensure the Hyper-V Server workaround mentioned above is applied. Otherwise, duplicate MAC addresses may be used, resulting in slow performance, boot issues, and other unexpected behavior.
- Unable to type certain characters ie Apostrophes / Quotation Marks, Inverted Commas, into DaDesktop machine.
